Do animals evolve with intent?

For example, bird flight evolved not from a single leap but rather gradual timely changes (according to our vast and limited knowledge of science and evolution itself). So I wonder, could awareness be a contributing factor in the evolution of all species?
Imagine thousands of avian critters bravely attempting flight with the cognitive desire to simply, fly.
Our current understanding of animal sentience, to my knowledge is not present in our kids textbooks today. I know from personal and professional experience that the cognitive presence found in animals is immensely beneficial to our understanding and improvement of the human experience. It serves to act as a mirror into our own emotional lives...
Ask yourself, does your dog and or cat live with intent?
