How do we determine intelligence in other species?

It has been known for a long time in the scientific commmunity that cetaceans are extremely intelligent creatures. For example, dolphins have been known to display evidence of self awareness. The cognitive capability for an animal to recognize itself, for example., in a mirror, provides scientists the methodology to determine intelligence in other species. In fact, this has also been proven in some species of birds as well.


Dr. Diana Reiss, adviser for the Oscar-winning film, The Cove, is one of the world's leading experts on dolphin intelligence. Her research is by far some of the greatest accomplishments of our time.
